Privacy and cookies

Last updated 21 October 2026.

This site belongs to Fou Films, the production company of director Nicholas Sherman, based in the UK. We collect as little as we can, never sell it, and never share your email address.

Questions, or want a copy or deletion of anything we hold about you? Email nicholassherman@gmail.com. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Cookies and your choice

Nothing below that needs your consent is switched on until you choose in the cookie banner. You can change your mind at any time.

Cookie settings

  • Google Analytics (analytics, only if you accept). Google Analytics 4 tells us which pages people visit and how they found the site. It sets the cookies _ga and _ga_0921R7R27F, which last up to 2 years. If you reject, Google receives only anonymous, cookieless signals (Google Consent Mode) that can’t recognise you from one visit to the next. Google is the processor; see how Google uses data from sites like this.
  • Advertising (only if you accept). Not used yet. If we advertise the film on Google or Meta (Facebook, Instagram), their measurement tags will load only for visitors who accepted advertising cookies, and this page will list them.

Our own visit counter

The site also keeps its own count of page views, so we know which pages people read and roughly where they came from (a search engine, an AI assistant, social media, email). It uses no cookies, and it doesn’t store your IP address, browser details or anything else that could identify you: each view becomes a line in a tally of page, date and channel. That is an anonymous statistic, which UK law allows without consent, but you can still opt out:

Opting out sets one cookie, st_nocount, which tells the site not to count you on this browser for a year.

What your browser remembers

These are kept in your browser’s local storage, never sent to us, and only make the site behave sensibly:

  • st_consent: your cookie choice, for 6 months.
  • st_popup_seen: when the mailing-list pop-up last appeared, so it shows at most once a month.
  • st_subscribed: that you signed up, so we don’t ask again.
  • st_bought: that you bought the film, so we don’t ask you to.

Clearing your browser’s site data removes them all.

Mailing list

If you join the mailing list, your email address (and whether you said you teach or organise screenings) goes to Sender, the service that sends our emails. We use it only to send you the free recording and occasional news about the film. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and we keep a backup copy of the list.

Buying the film

Checkout happens on Stripe’s own pages, which have their own cookies and privacy terms. We never see your card details. Stripe tells us your name, email address and, for DVDs, your delivery address, so we can send the download link, a thank-you email and your order. We count how often each download link is used, by order number, to stop links being shared. If you ticked the box for news at checkout, you join the mailing list too.

Other services

  • Fonts come from Google Fonts, so your browser asks Google’s servers for them.
  • Videos load from YouTube’s privacy-enhanced domain (youtube-nocookie.com), and only when you press play.
  • The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which handles every request and keeps short-lived security logs.
